Worst floods in Tripura since 1956 as MEA denies Bangladesh allegation

AGARTALA: Tripura is witnessing its worst floods since 1956 after heavy rains coupled with reverse flow of water wreaked havoc, flood management officials said on Thursday, even as MEA denying allegations that plains of Bangladesh were flooded because India opened the Dombur dam on the Gomti river in Tripura, reports Biswendu Bhattacharjee.

After heavy showers on Wednesday night across West Tripura district, more than 80 percent of Agartala is under water, officials said. The situation worsened in the city after it received 233 mm of rains on Wednesday that couldn’t be pumped out as the Haora River was overflowing. “Agartala is like a bowl barricaded with Haora River on one side and Kathakhal on the other. Generally, Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) pumps out water into the river in any flash flood situation from 17 locations but this around, the situation was different as water from both Haora and Kathakhal moved back and deposited water in the city through leaked embankments,” said AMC mayor Dipak Majumder.

Usually, water from Tripura flows down to Bangladesh through all 10 major rivers. This time Bangladesh has already been flooded due to excess rainfall over the week and now the water flow is going reverse in Gomati, Haora, Manu, and Muhuri rivers. The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement also denied the allegation that it was responsible for floods in the neighbouring country.
