Tripura’s forgotten fenced-out voters come out to vote

Agartala: After casting their votes for the formation of the 18th Lok Sabha here on Friday in Jaipur JB School, Indian citizens living beyond the barbed wire fence reiterated their appeal to the Tripura govt to repatriate them on Indian soil.Only 3km north of Agartala, as many as 15 families — all belonging to the minority community — have been living on no-man’s land for more than 20 years in Jaipur locality with 60 as registered voters of West Tripura parliamentary constituency and Ramnagar bypoll.“Election is the only occasion when we can mix with fellow Indians inside the wire fencing. During every election, we are urged by the administration to take part in the formation of a new govt for a better India. Although we always respond to the call, our problems remain unresolved,” said 40-year-old Fulbanu Begum.The fence was erected when she was not a voter and not even aware of the happenings. The fence divided the hamlet into two — a few of their relatives who lived in the eastern part became residents of India and the rest stayed on no-man’s land. But initially, there was no problem because movement was free, she told TOI.“After a few years, two gates were set up to regulate our movement to the other side of the fence inside Tripura. BSF was also posted. The rule was that we could move as freely as we could across the gate between 5 am and 6 pm showing our Indian documents but gradually the rules were tightened so much that we became isolated and alienated,” Fulbanu said.
