AGARTALA: Residents of SC Colony in Bilascherra village in Dhalai district locked up the panchayat chief and secretary in their office for two hours on Thursday, charging them with not fulfilling their promise of constructing a bridge over a rivulet, which has left the hamlet isolated for the past eight months.

The situation was resolved after panchayat samiti chairman Durga Chowmuhani Sampa Das, block development officer Sameer Das, and a large police contingent persuaded the villagers to release the officials, promising them that the construction work would commence soon.

This incident highlights the growing discontent among rural communities with elected village panchayats over the lack of development in the past five years.

A significant portion of development funds has been allegedly misappropriated, resulting in inadequate rural infrastructure and poor maintenance of existing assets.

The villagers claimed that the panchayat chief had repeatedly promised to build the bridge before the monsoon season, but no progress had been made despite the allocation of Rs 25 lakh for the project.

Shipra Das, a local, drew attention to the challenges faced by 130 residents, including 25 school students, in the absence of the bridge, particularly during medical emergencies.
