Tripura teacher facing molestation charge beaten up, dies 2 days later

Agartala: Tension gripped Tripura following the death of a schoolteacher facing molestation charge, police said on Sunday. He died at the Agartala Govt Medical College on Saturday, two days after he was allegedly beaten up by unidentified miscreants at an undisclosed location in Gomati district.
The teacher was posted in a govt school. His wife, also a teacher, alleged that two unidentified persons forcibly took him away from a local market in Udaipur on August 8. She said her husband was called to one Shankar Karmakar’s house on Polotti Road in Udaipur town and beaten up for allegedly sending obscene messages to a Class VII girl, whom he would give private tuitions. Later that night, he was handed over to police with critical injuries, following which police informed the family, she added.
SP (Gomati) Namit Pathak said, “The teacher was brought to us in a critical condition and we immediately shifted him to Gomati district hospital. A case of molestation was pending against him. When he was first discharged from hospital, he was produced before court. He, however, fell ill again, and had to be taken back to the district hospital, which referred him to Agartala Govt Medical College, where he died on Saturday.”
“We are yet to receive the post-mortem report. Therefore, we cannot comment on the cause of his death. We will do everything as per law to ensure justice for the bereaved family,” the SP added.
The deceased’s wife accused the girl’s family of hiring the miscreants to kill her husband. She said AGMC released her husband’s body without a post-mortem despite the family reporting that he was beaten up and there were multiple injury marks on the body. “When the body was brought to Udaipur on Saturday night, we took it back to Gomati district hospital for post-mortem. It was handed over to us on Sunday morning after an autopsy,” she said, seeking CM’s intervention into the incident.
