Sharp dip in crime rate: Tripura DGP

Agartala: Tripura has recorded a significant drop in crime rate in 2024, which appeared to be the lowest in a decade, claimed director general of police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan on Friday. After inspecting the police stations and outposts in Khowai district, the DGP highlighted proactive measures being taken by the state police to maintain law and order, curb general crime, and peaceful Durga Puja celebrations. After the review meeting of chief minister Manik Saha early this week, fresh directives were issued to the police stations and ground-level security personnel. Ranjan emphasised that the police have intensified their efforts to ensure public safety during the festive season. Senior police officers have been inspecting police stations, Tripura State Rifles (TSR) camps, and other security outposts, focusing on identifying potential lapses in security and improving infrastructure. “We have initiated comprehensive reviews of our policing systems, and welfare activities are also being addressed to boost the efficiency of our force,” Ranjan said, adding that Tripura Police showed significant improvement in curbing crime, and the last few elections passed without any major incidents.To ensure a peaceful Durga Puja, Ranjan revealed that large-scale deployment of forces is in the pipeline, with orders expected soon. The police are also cracking down on forceful collection of donations, with strict directives in place to prevent such practices. “This year, we have recorded the lowest crime rate in 10 years. In 2014, the total crime figure stood at 4,026, while by August 2024, it dropped to 2,700. Despite population growth and challenges, we have successfully controlled and reduced crime,” he noted. He also pointed to a considerable decline in crimes against women, with figures dropping from 2,700 between 2014 and 2016 to 1,500 in the period from 2022 to 2024. Physical violence cases have also decreased from 2,800 to 2,500, while property-related offences have gone down from 1,240 to around 800.
