AGARTALA: Shila Rani Das, now 53 and a mother of two, cleared her Madhyamik examinations with flying colours, results of which were declared on Wednesday. But there’s more.

Not only she but her elder daughter who is married and a mother of one, also cleared higher secondary exams this year as did her younger daughter under Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE).

Like millions of underprivileged Indians, Shila Rani, a resident of Milan Sangha area of Agartala and now employed with Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), had dropped out of school because of poverty and married off soon after. She lost her husband, who was a daily wage labourer, a few years back.

As millions struggled during the Covid-19 pandemic, Shila and her daughters family, immersed themselves in studies to clear the board exams. The restricted daily routine and sheer commitment yielded good results and both the daughters and mother came out with flying colours.

Shila never gave up on her dream to clear Madhyamik, neither did her elder daughter Rajashree who is now married and has a seven-year-old son. While Shila wrote her Madhyamik exam, Rajashree and her sister Jayasree appeared for higher secondary. An ecstatic Rajashree told the media, “I am very proud that I could succeed in the exams and my mother could witness it in her lifetime. I could not invest much time in studies due to my household chores but I could manage to clear the exam which is a big achievement for our family.”
