Tripura man returns home after spending 36 yrs in B’desh jail

Agartala: A 62-year-old man from Tripura’s Sepahijala district returned home on Tuesday after spending 36 years in a Bangladesh jail. He was arrested by police in Bangladesh in 1988 during a visit to his in-laws’ house without proper documents.The man, identified as Shahjahan, faced numerous legal proceedings and was eventually handed over to BSF personnel at Srimantapur LCS on Tuesday. Zara Foundation, an NGO, played a crucial role in facilitating his return to India.Shahjahan was charged with various cases, resulting in an 11-year sentence in Comilla jail. However, even after completing his jail term, he remained imprisoned for an additional 25 years due to a lack of required documents.Expressing his joy upon returning home, Shahjahan said, “I left home with only my wife behind. When I returned, my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter came to take me back home. It feels like I’ve arrived in heaven.”
