Agartala: A 57-year-old man was arrested in Tripura’s Gomati district on Saturday on charges of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl when she was returning home from school.
After his arrest, the locals stormed the police station at night and demanded and exemplary punishment for the accused. The officer-in-charge of the station, Rajib Bhowmik, said, “The interrogation of the accused is continuing and he has been booked under sections 341 and 354 of the IPC and Section 8 of the Pocso Act.”
Police said the minor girl, a student of Class III, was allegedly stopped by the accused identified as Safik Miah on a lonely road stretch.
He then caught hold of the child and sexually assaulted her.
The girl, however, managed to run away from the spot and narrated the ordeal to her parents after she reached home.
The girl’s father immediately filed a case based on which police picked up Safik Miah in the evening.
