Tripura outfits’ leaders to continue fighting for tribals

Agartala: Less than a week after signing a peace agreement with the Centre and Tripura govt, leaders of National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All-Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) announced their intention to continue fighting for the socio-economic and political uplift of the indigenous communities, which evoked a reaction from civil society and citizens. The initial financial package of Rs 250 crore and the compensation for the 328 cadres of the outfits were deemed insufficient by some.The leaders of both outfits said a joint working group would evaluate their demands and recommend further packages for the development of indigenous people. Ranjit Debbarma, a former ATTF supremo-turned-MLA from TIPRA Motha, played a crucial role in the peace pact at a time when the outfits had lost support and resources. However, the brutality of ATTF and NLFT militants, who killed at least 250 civilians and security personnel between 1993 and 2007, was justified by Upendra Reang, secretary general of NLFT’s Biswamohan faction as a means to fight for the empowerment of the tribal community.
