Tripura fits radio collars on three wild jumbos

Agartala: To track the movement of the wild elephants in the human habitations along the Atharomura foothill of Tripura’s Khowai district, the state forest department has decided to install radio collars on three elephants who have been known to encroach upon human habitations, causing harm to villagers over an extended period.The radio collar installation operation began on Sunday targeting the leader of the herd, Moti.The initiative aims to track the movement of wild elephants, especially around the Krishnapur and Kalyanpur areas, where they often ravage agricultural fields and houses in search of food, particularly during winter and dry seasons. This proactive measure will enable forest officials to anticipate their movements and take preventive actions to minimise man-elephant conflicts. More than 12 persons have sustained injuries due to elephant attacks in the past five years. The killings of a number of elephants were also reported in the two areas, forest officials said.Chief wildlife warden Dr R K Samal emphasised the urgency of tagging elephants with radio collars, highlighting Moti’s particularly aggressive behaviour. “An elephant named Moti was the most aggressive among others and took a drive to radio collar the elephant. The installation operation will be continued till the elephant is tagged with radio collars. They often venture out of the forest and wreak havoc on houses and crops,” the warden said.This ongoing operation seeks to collar the elephants effectively, providing data to mitigate conflicts.“Last year, we installed radio collars and gathered sufficient data to study the behaviour of wild elephants. Now we have decided to install trackers so that the movement of elephants early and take preventive measures to mitigate human-elephant conflict,” said Khowai district forest officer Dr Akshay Borde.In a related development, Jamnagar-based Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust recently relocated the 36-year-old ailing female elephant named Pratima and her two-year-old son Maniklal from Irani village of Kailashahar, Unokoti district, to its rescue center. This follows a directive from the Tripura high court, reflecting a concerted effort to ensure the well-being of captive elephants.
