Tripura East gears up to vote amid tight security

Agartala: The vocal campaign for the Tripura East (ST) parliamentary constituency ended on Wednesday and the election will be held across 1,664 polling stations on Friday. As many as 13,95,089 electors, including 6,93,365 female, and 16 transgender voters, will decide the fate of nine candidates.Veteran CPM leader and former MLA Rajendra Reang has been contesting as INDIA bloc nominee against BJP’s candidate Kriti Singh Debbarman, who hails from Chattishgarh, elder sister of TIPRA Motha’s founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbamran, besides seven Independent candidates.Comprising 30 assembly segments, East Tripura has 49% tribal voters from Dhalai, North Tripura, Unakoti, Khowai and four assemblies of South Tripura and three assemblies of Gomati districts, which registered at least 4,349 service voters, 8,734 voters of over 85 years of age and 10,560 physically challenged electors. The EC has deployed over 50 companies of central paramilitary personnel along with state police and Tripura State Rifles jawans to conduct the election peacefully.
