AGARTALA: A local court in Sonamura of Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Friday issued notice to the Officer-in-charge of West Agartala police station Paritosh Das seeking his reply on the allegation of looting cash from a house during an anti-narcotic search last year when he was posted there.

The complainant Ershad Rahaman, a resident of N C Nagar in Sonamura town alleged the then Officer-in-charge of Sonamura police station Paritosh Das along with 19 other policemen raided his house without a warrant on the night of Nov 5 and looted Rs 16 lakh cash from his house.

“The police team led by Das broke the door and snatched away the cash which I got from selling a plot of land on that day itself. They charged me for being involved in the drug business and said the money I got from a drug deal. Police took away the money without any seizure or record as they weren't able to find any link with illegal activities,” Ershad told the court.

The amount was supposed to be deposited in my account and on the next day when Ershad went to the police station to get the cashback, OC Das denied the claim and said he was not aware of any cash. Then he complained to SP Sepahijala and other top bosses of Tripura police to get back his money but didn’t get any response, even his FIR was also denied.

Thereafter, Ershad moved to High Court where police were directed to register an FIR and start an investigation while the complainant was advised to lodge a criminal complaint in the local court if the police didn’t act properly. Accordingly, Ershad filed a robbery case before the first-class Magistrate of Sonamura against Paritosh Das and a civil police volunteer Dilawar Hossain.

After hearing the case the court issued notice against the accused under section 223 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, said the complainant’s advocate Purusattam Roybarman, adding that in many cases police took advantage of their position and harassed the people.
