Agartala: After an impressive show in the just concluded Lok Sabha polls, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has convened a meeting on Tuesday to decide on the continuation of its alliance with the Left Front for next month’s panchayat elections.
Congress and the Left Front fought last year’s assembly polls and the recent Lok Sabha elections together.
But TPCC president Ashis Kumar Saha on Sunday said a decision was yet to be taken as far as the ensuing three-tier rural polls were concerned. “Electoral success is not a matter of concern at this point of time, but having a united voice against BJP, thereby helping strengthen the democratic environment in the state,” he said.
He, however, added that continuing the alliance with CPM-led Left Front in the coming days required a threadbare discussion among party leaders at different levels. “In the meeting called on June 18, leaders right from the grassroots level will be present. We will hold discussions, take their feedback and analyse the current political situation before arriving at a final decision,” he said.
Meanwhile, the party’s state unit leaders held a meeting on Saturday to finalise the guidelines and a blueprint for launching a protest against rising unemployment, drug abuse, corruption and maladministration under BJP’s rule.
Saha said in the decade-long rule of PM Modi, there were several instances of question paper leak in many states, the latest being the NEET paper fiasco, which has put the lives of lakhs of students in jeopardy. “BJP has destroyed the state and left it in the hands of drug kingpin. We will fight against this. The Youth Congress will also protest,” he added.
Congress also lent its support to a protest on Saturday alleging that three BJP goons stormed into the Gournagar RD block office in Unakoti district and assaulted govt employees. Local Congress MLA Birajit Sinha said three BJP cadres identified as Jewel Ahmed, Abdul Qadir, and Rajib Ali forcibly entered an office chamber and assaulted three employees — Pulkesh Nag, Pinki Pal Chowdhury and Mohitosh Bhattacharjee .
