‘Shakti Abhiyan’ to empower women in governance
Agartala: The Tripura Pradesh Congress initiated the ‘Shakti Abhiyan’ on Tuesday to empower women in politics through the Indira Fellowship program, which is dedicated to the memory of the former Prime Minister.
AICC observer Mumtaz Begum emphasized that Congress has been working diligently to encourage and empower women, protect their rights and interests, and provide training in governance, politics, and decision-making processes.
Mumtaz highlighted that “Lok Sabha leader of the opposition, Rahul Gandhi, is deeply invested in the idea of ensuring larger participation of women in politics and nation-building and has urged women to join this revolution through Shakti Abhiyan.”
She further explained that the Indira Fellowship is a crucial aspect of Shakti Abhiyan, designed to offer a platform for women based on the core principles of ‘Haq, Hissedari, and Pehchan.’
According to Mumtaz, over the course of a year, more than 300 fellows have established 4300 Shakti Clubs with an impressive 31,000 members across 28 states and 350 blocks in the country. These clubs serve as the focal point for setting up and running the Shakti Abhiyan.
Tripura Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha stated, “Our goal is to ensure that women receive a 50% share in resources, opportunities, and power structures. Through this poignant initiative, we aim to create an equal space for building ‘women’s interest’ in politics and decision-making, encouraging representation 'of women by women’ at all levels of governance — local bodies, legislative assemblies, and Parliament.”
