Tripura begins prep for rural polls in July

Agartala: Amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in the country, the Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) has initiated preparations for three-tier panchayat polls in the state likely to be held in the last week of July, SEC sources said here on Tuesday.The SEC has commenced the process of finalising the electoral roll and polling stations, which will be updated from the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls. The commission issued a notification saying the draft publication of the electoral roll is scheduled for June 6 — two days after the announcement of the Lok Sabha poll result.The claims and objections will be accepted between June 13 and 18. After due hearing and disposal, the final voter list will be published on June 24. The electoral roll will be prepared based on the attaining age of 18 years as of January 1, 2024, said state election commissioner Saradindu Chaudhuri.He said the tenure of the incumbent bodies of village panchayats, panchayat samitis, and zilla parishad would be completed in July. Therefore, the election process of three-tier panchayats has to be completed within the time frame as per law.“We have started our preparation and if everything is completed on time, SEC will submit the proposal to the govt to holding the elections. Meantime, we have finished the demarcation of the village panchayats and the block development officers (BDO) designated Ros have assumed their responsibilities to complete all preparatory works by next month,” Chaudhuri said.There were 591 village panchayats and the administration proposes to add another 16 new panchayats to the list, which will go for polling along with 116 seats of panchayat samiti and 8 zilla parishad.The election will be held in 6,011 seats of village panchayats, 419 seats of panchayat samitis, and 116 seats of zilla parishads. The ruling BJP had won about 98% of seats in three-tier panchayats in the last election in 2019, 85% of those unopposed.

Bungaput Panchayat tribals threaten to boycott polls for not stablishing polling booth
