Tripura agarwood gains global attention, Japan team explores plants

Agartala: A Japanese delegation led by Kei Otsuki, second secretary of the economic wing at the Embassy of Japan in India, and Fujiwara Hidenobu, a representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) India, visited agarwood plantations and processing units in North Tripura on Wednesday. All Tripura Agar Association facilitated the visit to showcase the potential of the agar industry in both local and international markets. The delegation travelled to Kadamtala, a major hub for agarwood cultivation, where they visited an agar plantation and participated in a ceremonial planting of five agar saplings, symbolising the deepening relationship between Japan and India in this sector. The Japanese officials expressed their interest in Tripura’s agarwood industry, praising the state’s high-quality production, which has made India one of the leading exporters of agarwood products globally. Kei Otsuki told the media, “The contribution of Tripura to India’s agarwood industry is remarkable. The high-quality agarwood and the sustainable practices employed here are examples of how local industries can thrive globally.” The region has become a focal point for global interest in agarwood, a fragrant wood highly prized for its use in perfumes, incense, and traditional medicine. Tripura govt, in collaboration with the Centre, has allocated over Rs 400 crore for the development of the agarwood industry.

Movement along Bangladesh border in Tripura prohibited

West Tripura authorities have imposed a nighttime movement restriction along a 500-meter stretch of the India-Bangladesh border due to heightened tensions and infiltration concerns. Effective until December 19, the order aims to prevent law and order issues. Security forces and essential service providers are exempt from this restriction.

NHIDCL makes Tripura unhappy, Gadkari sanctions Rs 2800 cr communication projects

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari agreed to fund Rs 2800 crore for Tripura's infrastructure, addressing quality concerns over NHIDCL's work. Projects include the Agartala Eastern Bypass, expansion of roads to Tripura Sundari Temple, and a new National Highway to enhance trade and tourism. Chief Minister Saha highlighted ongoing and future connectivity projects to boost local economies.

A Tripura police SI with a constable and three SPOs detained on custodial torture

South Tripura police have detained five personnel, including a sub-inspector and a constable, for allegedly torturing a theft suspect who later died in the hospital. The incident has sparked public outrage, with the victim's family demanding murder charges. An inquiry has been initiated amid accusations of government negligence in similar past cases.
