AGARTALA: Sporadic incidents of violence were reported during the byelections to the two assembly seats of Dhanpur and Boxanagar of Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Tuesday which saw a turnout of 86.56%.

Counting of votes will be taken up on Friday.

In tribal-dominated areas of Dhanpur, eight BJP workers were injured in attacks allegedly by CPM cadres, sources said. All the injured persons have been sent to Agartala Government Medical College and Hospital with serious injuries, they added.

However, demanding the arrest of tribal welfare minister Bikash Debbarma and immediate removal of returning officers and superintendent of police Sepahijala district, the opposition CPM wanted elections to both seats countermanded.
