Saha vows to make Tripura plastic-free

Agartala: Tripura chief minister Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday reiterated the decision of his government to make the state “plastic free” as Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a crusade against single-use plastic to save the earth from pollution while rolling out the chariot to mark Rath Yatra Mela and Utsav at Melaghar in Sepahijala district.
He said the Tripura government has already issued a ban on single-use plastic long back and the state government has been trying desperately to pull a stop to the plastic menace. “Now, I have decided to fight tooth and nail against the plastic pollution to fulfil the PM’s dream.”
Saha called upon the people to join hands with the government to fight against plastic pollution and waste management. He rued the poor participation of civil society and the common citizens in Swachhata Abhiyan.
“The government has taken the initiative to beautify Neermahal (the lone water palace of eastern India and a Ramsar site) and I urge everyone to contribute to its preservation. Recently, Sudha Murthy, chairperson of Infosys Foundation, visited Neermahal and expressed her displeasure over finding garbage in and around the waterbody. She brought the matter to my attention and I assured her that we would promptly address this issue,” Saha told the gathering.
