Tripura’s border haat sees record sale amid B’desh turmoil

Agartala: Despite unrest and tension across Bangladesh, Srinagar Border Haat in South Tripura along the Indo-Bangla border reopened on Tuesday, which was closed during student movement across the border two weeks ago.Officials said South Tripura district administration was not keen to reopen the Border Haat considering the threat of influx. However, it had to resume functioning after repeated persuasion from the Bangladesh counterpart.According to the report, Bangladeshi nationals depend largely on Indian cosmetics, confectionaries, spices, edible oil, sugar and daily consumables. Agartala and Kolkata are the most preferred shopping destinations for Bangladeshis for several years. These markets were closed for over a fortnight.“Tuesday was an exemplary day of business for Indian traders at the Srinagar Border Haat. Whatever goods and products were brought for sale were exhausted within two hours. Bangladesh army personnel have bought most of the items in bulk at the haat. Few civilians and Bangladeshi traders also made purchases at the haat,” a senior South Tripura district administration official said.Altogether, 27 traders from Bangladesh and Tripura participated in the market, offering a range of products.

Seventeen Indian road construction workers were safely brought back from Bangladesh amidst ongoing unrest. Employed by AFCONS Infrastructure Private Limited, the workers were constructing a road between Akhaura and Kishoreganj. With quick coordination between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the workers returned to India via the international border in Tripura late on Wednesday night.

BSF prevented infiltration attempts of a Bangladeshi group in Tripura border

BSF personnel at the Paharmura Border Outpost in Tripura's Khowai district on Monday thwarted an infiltration attempt by Bangladeshi nationals amidst ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh. Despite harsh weather conditions and poor visibility, the group attempted to cross the border but retreated after BSF troops fired a warning shot. Six individuals were eventually detained by local police.
