Probe launched into ragging at med college

Agartala: A special team of Amtali police station in the city has launched an investigation into alleged ragging of newcomers by 18 students of Tripura Medical College. The accused students, mostly females and admitted last year, hail from Tripura and Mizoram. Some of them failed their first-year exams and are preparing for supplementary tests.
Police have issued notices to the accused, and six of them have already been interrogated. The investigation has prima facie established the allegations, which appear to be limited to intimidation and threats rather than physical ragging.
Tripura Medical College authorities have expelled the students from the hostel for a year and imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh. The principal has also informed the guardians about the incident and sought their assurance to allow the students to continue their studies.
The case is being investigated under Section 4 of the Tripura Educational Institution (prevention of ragging rules) against the 18 students.
The National Medical Commission’s (NMC) anti-ragging cell received multiple complaints from students with digital proof against the accused.
