AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday claimed that normalcy has been restored in Kadamtala, under North Tripura district, and the administration took steps to hold Durga puja in the locality after rounds of meetings with the community leaders.
Tripura has a long-standing tradition of celebrating Shard festival with all communities across the state, and the state government would not allow the mischievous elements to play communal cards to disturb peace and harmony.
“Police have been asked to identify the miscreants involved in Kadamtala incident and nobody will be spared. As many as eight persons including five Durga puja organizers have already been arrested in connection with the peace-breaking activities in the past two days – more will be booked soon,” Dr Saha stated.
The SP (North) Bhanupada Chakraborty said that all eight persons were arrested in connection with the communal violence that took place on Sunday following the forceful collection of subscriptions for Durga Puja in Kadamtala.
The people from both communities have come together and held peace meetings and the situation is under control. The incident occurred on Sunday when a family from the minority community in Kadamtala was traveling to Assam for medical treatment, Chakraborty said.
While en route, they were reportedly stopped by a Durga Puja organiser who allegedly demanded a hefty sum of money. This led to a heated argument and eventually a scuffle. Later, members of the minority community staged a protest outside the local police station, demanding action against the Puja organizer. Based on their complaint, two people were arrested.
However, the situation escalated when miscreants launched attacks on the local market, vandalizing and setting shops on fire, which further aggravated tensions. The miscreants also looted and ransacked many shops and also launched attacks on some houses. The violence left one person dead and several others, including security personnel, injured, he added.
