Mother donated son for first Kidney transplants in Agartala Govt Medical College
AGARTALA: Tripura celebrated a historic achievement after Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) successfully performed the state's first-ever kidney transplant on a 20-year-old patient, which is donated by his mother.
Chief minister Manik Saha congratulated the medical team compromised with 15 members from AGMC and Shija Hospitals and Research Institute of Imphal.
The complex procedure, which took nearly five hours, marks a significant advancement in the region's medical capabilities, said Director, Health Service Dr Sanjib Kumar Debbarma.
The groundwork for this milestone began with a meeting on kidney transplantation on August last year with involvement of chief minister Manik Saha who is also a Professor of Tripura Medical College followed by the formation of a dedicated team.
The state government sought mentorship of Shija hospital in kidney transplants, Dr Debbarma said adding that the collaborative efforts between AGMC and Shija to ensure a successful operation.
The patient, who was admitted in January with a dangerously high creatinine level of 16, had been undergoing dialysis at AGMC. In a direct intervention led by chief minister Dr Saha, the patient's case was prioritized, leading to the formation of an MoU with Shija in May this year.
The transplant surgery was scheduled for Monday with the patient’s mother donating her kidney. The operation was performed free of cost, with the government covering all expenses, including those for the visiting medical team from Manipur.
Necessary medicines and equipment were sourced from Shija Hospital. Dr Guliver Potsangbam, a nephrologist from Shija Hospitals, led the surgical team, and stated the procedure's success and the patient's stable condition post-surgery.
Dr Potsangbam praised the facilities of AGMC, noting that all recommendations were promptly implemented. He assured continued mentorship until the local medical team could independently perform such surgeries. Shija Hospitals, with a track record of 114 kidney transplants since 2016, brought invaluable experience to the table.
The surgery began at 9 AM and ended at 2:30 PM, was attended by key medical personnel from AGMC, including Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Kanak Chowdhury, urologists Dr Bijit Lodh and Dr Mukut Debnath, and nephrologists Dr Manas Gope and Dr Samaresh Pal besides a group of non clinical team, Dr Debbarma added.
