Agartala: The special judge of Dhalai district court on Saturday sentenced four persons to various years of prison terms for their involvement in drug peddling. While one was awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment (RI), the other three persons were sentenced to two years of RI each.
In a press statement, the Tripura Police said Sanjit Rudra Pal, Surendra Debbarma, Prasanta Deb and Krishna Charan Debroy were arrested in connection with a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2019.
Pal was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment for commissioning the offence, punishable under Section 21(b) of the NDPS Act, and is liable to pay a fine of Rs 50,000. Debbarma, Deb and Debroy were awarded two years of imprisonment under Section 29 of the NDPS Act and a fine of Rs 20,000 each was imposed on them.
The police said they had recovered 7.6 grams of heroin from Pal's possession and arrested him along with the three others during a search.
SI Subir Saha of Ambassa Police Station (now posted at Chowmanu PS) investigated the case and submitted the charge sheet before the court.
