Flood situation deteriorated in Tripura 7 died and thousands homeless, CM cut short Delhi visit
AGARTALA: At least seven persons died in separate locations of three districts in Tripura due to landslides and drowning while two others went missing and over 5600 people rendered homeless following incessant rainfall since Sunday night.
Official release said five people reportedly lost lives in separate locations of South Tripura and one each from Khowai and Gomati district. And, one each from Gomati and Khowai district had gone missing since Monday morning. As many as 200 teams have been deployed across the state to carry out relief and rescue operations.
A total of 183 relief camps for 5607 flood affected families have been opened in all eight districts. Belonia in South Tripura has been cut off from the rest of the state after both the major connecting roads slipped down in multiple locations, coupled with landslides and inundation of roads in multiple places.
All major rivers have been flowing over the danger marks and all the low-lying areas around Agartala and all other district towns submerged. Vast localities in Pratapgarh and Khayerpur areas the city has been inundated and triggered a flash flood leaving a large number of families homeless.
As per the IMD forecast, due to active monsoon there will be heavy to moderate rainfall over all districts of Tripura for next two days. IMD has issued a red alert for South Tripura and an orange alert for seven other districts of the state.
South Tripura's Bagafa and Belonia in South Tripura have recorded an extraordinary rainfall of 375.8 mm and 324.4 mm followed by 307.1 mm in Amarpur of Gomati district and 150 mm in Agartala in 24 hours.
The rain is very likely to continue over Tripura due to a low-pressure over Central parts of Bangladesh & neighborhood persists over the region associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, IMD forecast mentioned.
Chief minister Manik Saha has been taking stock of the flood situation from New Delhi and according to sources he has cut short his Delhi trip and is returning tonight due to deteriorating flood situation and to hold a review meeting at night upon arrival.
The extreme rainfall has triggered landslides and fallen of trees in many areas that caused road blockades and disturbed interstate connectivity. There are reports of damages to houses and livestock, report stated adding that the government assured to provide compensation to the victims after due assessment.
