Agartala: South Tripura Police have arrested five police personnel, including an SI and a constable, for allegedly torturing a theft case accused on Oct 13 at Manubazar police station. The accused, Badal Tripura, succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Thursday morning.
Following the incident, the deceased’s family and locals staged a demonstration in front of the police station, demanding immediate action against the accused policemen. They insisted on booking the personnel on murder charges and ensuring a judicial inquiry into the matter.
SP (South) Ashok Sinha stated, “SI Premjit Roy and constable Rajkumar Tripura have been suspended from service while three SPOs were dismissed from service. All five were detained in the morning after the death of the accused.”
He assured the protestors of a thorough investigation.
According to reports, Badal Tripura (38) and Chiranjit Tripura (35) were arrested by Roy on Sunday in a theft case and brought to the police station in an inebriated state. The victim’s family alleged that the accused were severely beaten by the police personnel, resulting in Badal’s critical condition. Despite his injuries, he was not provided timely medical attention.
The leader of the opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, criticized the state govt for not taking strong action against police personnel involved in custodial torture. He pointed out that this is the third such incident in the last two months, and the lack of exemplary action has led to unruly behaviour among some policemen.
