Excess rain worsens flood situation in Tripura
AGARTALA: At least 10 people have died in rain-triggered landslides and drowning tragedies in Tripura since Tuesday, with incessant showers wreaking havoc in the state. While seven persons had died in Tuesday’s landslides, three more deaths occurred Wednesday, one of them from drowning.
Chief minister Manik Sa contacted Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday morning, requesting additional NDRF personnel to assist with flood response and rescue operations in Tripura. The state is facing a deteriorating flood situation due to persistent heavy rainfall. Saha informed Shah about the severe flood conditions and stated, “I have been assured of all support in this critical situation.”
In response to the worsening weather and flood situation, the Tripura govt announced the closure of all educational institutions on Wednesday and Thursday. The flood situation has intensified in several districts, including South Tripura, Gomati, West Tripura, Khowai, and Unakoti, following excessive rainfall in the past 24 hours.
Reports indicate that embankment walls along rivers in North Tripura, Unakoti, and Khowai have been breached due to heavy water pressure, flooding habitations and towns. More than 6,000 families have been relocated to relief camps across the state so far.
The central part of Agartala is completely under water, including the CM’s personal home. The IMD has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tripura until Thursday.
