Agartala: The first elected woman representative of Tripura’s three-tier panchayat system — a housewife of a lower-middle-class family, Supriya Das Datta, represented India along with two others at the Population Development Commission session as part of the 57th session of the UN at its HQ in New York on Friday.The daughter of Shital Das, a daily wage labourer of the flower-producing village Laxmibeel of Bishalgarh in Sepahijala, she grew up in poverty and completed her secondary studies with a first division.Addressing the ‘CPD57 Side Event: Localizing the SDGs: Women in Local Governance in India Lead the Way’, Supriya highlighted her success story of empowering women, including the construction of separate restrooms in govt offices and the exponential growth of SHGs from 600 to almost 6,000. which earned her praise at the session, she said.
