Agartala: Communal tension escalated at Pekucherra, North Tripura, on Tuesday following the vandalization of places of worship by miscreants, according to police reports. In response to the unrest, authorities have deployed security personnel and have suspended internet and text message services for a period of three days in the North Tripura region. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incidents.
Trouble began late on Monday night when miscreants damaged a place of worship of at Pekucherra. This act of vandalism triggered a strong reaction among locals, leading to a retaliatory attack on another place of worship, which was subsequently ransacked.
The unrest also extended to Unokoti district, where people of a particular community gathered at the Irani police station in Kailashahar to demand protection.
