AGARTALA

: Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturdayinaugurated the state's first-ever Hornbill Festival at the famous Barmura Hill - one of the biggest hill ranges of Tripura which was last month renamed as "Hathai Kotor" or "big hill" in Kokborok, a tribal language.


Deb unveiled a Hornbill point and also inaugurated a loghut at the Baramura Eco Park in West Tripura to facilitate tourists to enjoy the beauty of nature and its landscape.

Though the Hornbill Festival is a decade-old cultural festival hosted by Nagaland, considering the dwindling state of rare species of hornbill birds in Tripura, the state government has started the bio-diversity conservation festival after the hornbill bird, which is found in the Baramura range.

Wildlife officials said people living around the Baramura hill are mostly tribals who consider the hornbill as their community member. Hornbill Conservation area at the Baramura Eco-park is one of the initiatives of the state forest department to encourage birders, nature enthusiasts, and photographers, said chief wildlife warden DK Sharma.
