They, along with former PM Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League supporters, have reportedly come under attack ever since she fled the country. They are allegedly facing atrocities in Dhaka, Patuakhali, Syllet, Srimangal, Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Noakhali, Feni and Chittagrame. Houses, properties and belongings of more than 17,000 families in Bangladesh have been destroyed, while about one lakh people have run away from their localities seeking shelter in safe places. The protesters allegedly issued an open threat to the minorities to leave Bangladesh saying that it would soon be declared an Islamic country.

A businessman from Brahmanbaria said, “Not only minority communities, but even Muslims who supported Hasina and those who support democracy are being targeted by the protesters. We all have been identified as India’s sympathisers.”

BSF sources said villagers from Bangladesh gathered beyond the barbed border fence in isolated pockets of Kailashahar, Kamalpur, Khowai, Simna, Narshinghar, Belabar, Kamalasagar, Sonamura and Sabroom.

At a few places, we spoke to the Border Guard of Bangladesh and requested them to take them back and ensure security and dignity of life for them. We are also trying to persuade them not to leave their country and are pursuing the matter with the local administration,” a BSF official at the Tripura border said.

Meanwhile, the rights and religious bodies of Tripura are calling for boycotting Bangladeshi goods.
