BSF shares dossier with BGB to tackle cross-border crime

Agartala: BSF Tripura Frontier exchanged a dossier of touts and criminals with its Bangladesh counterpart, the Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB), during a regional commander-level meeting in Shillong that concluded on July 4, said IG Tripura Frontier Patel Piyush Purushottam Das here on Sunday.
A sudden increase in Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya infiltrations through Tripura has alarmed border security across India. The ministry of home affairs has reportedly alerted the state govt, prompting a review meeting by the chief minister with BSF officials and other security agencies regarding cross-border movement and crime.
IG Das said the three-day meeting included a detailed discussion on these issues, with BGB assuring action against the criminals as per the law. Both border forces agreed to identify vulnerable patches along the border and enhance coordinated patrols.
The decision was also made to share telephone numbers at the field commander level to enable real-time information sharing. This multi-dimensional approach aims to ensure a safe and secure border in Tripura. BSF has intensified operations against touts and trans-border criminals to curb the influx of Bangladeshi nationals and smuggling of contraband items in Tripura.
Das pointed out that security has been strengthened in sensitive border outposts and a special operation launched to crack down on networks of touts and smugglers in bordering areas. “BSF has a zero-tolerance policy against such activities, and field commanders have been briefed to launch intelligence-based operations to eliminate border crime,” he added.
IG Das further said physical domination has been augmented with state-of-the-art surveillance technology, including AI-enabled cameras and facial recognition tools. Gaps in border fencing are being plugged using improvised methods.
