Agartala: Gaurav Gogoi, deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, has accused the
BJP of plotting to transform Tripura into another
Manipur by failing to take action against those responsible for setting fire to numerous houses and shops in Gandatwisa, Dhalai district, on July 12, following the death of a college student.
Accompanied by AICC leader Tariq Anwar, Gaurav visited various parts of Tripura for two days, engaging with party workers and meeting with the governor to request his intervention in halting violence, attacks on opposition party workers, and clashes in Gandatwisa.
“It is clear Tripura is heading towards the situation of Manipur under BJP’s rule where democracy has been murdered. In Manipur, the same thing happened along ethnic lines, and due to the govt’s inaction it gradually turned into a disaster, and the party in power played a dubious role,” he said.
The attacks have left around 165 permanent residents of Gandatwisa homeless, and they are currently sheltered in camps. Gaurav alleged that the administration has neither arrested a single accused person nor assured adequate compensation to the victim families.
Denying the allegations, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee said, “The opposition parties of Tripura are unnecessarily defaming the state with baseless talks.”
