At 17%, Tripura worst NE state in suicide index: NCRB data

Agartala: Tripura has emerged as the worst among the seven Northeastern states in the suicide index, surpassing the national average, said Dr P J Chakma, a senior psychiatrist in the state. He shared this information on Tuesday during a rally celebrating World Suicide Prevention Day.Chakma said the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed that approximately 17% of suicide cases in India were registered in Tripura, compared to the national average of 12%. Sikkim recorded the highest suicide rate in the country at 43.1%, followed by Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Puducherry, and Kerala. He said the suicide data available up to 2022 shows that after Tripura, Mizoram recorded a suicide rate of 12.4%, Assam 9.4%, Meghalaya 6.4%, Nagaland 2.2%, and Manipur 0.8%. Conversely, Bihar registered the lowest suicide rate in the country at 0.6%. “The study indicates that social and economic issues are the primary factors contributing to the increasing suicide rates in Tripura. In some cases, emotional setbacks, frustration, and other personal issues have influenced suicides, particularly among individuals aged 18-35 years,” said Chakma, an assistant professor at Agartala Govt Medical College. He further explained that anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, disruptive behaviour, dissocial disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders are common causes of suicide across India, and Tripura is no exception.
