AGARTALA: CM Manik Saha who is also holding the health portfolio on Wednesday said that Tripura government has undertaken various measures to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids in the state including extensive testing of vulnerable groups and sensitization programmes.

Reacting to some recent media reports Saha said, “It led to misgivings on the number of infected persons and fatalities. A total of 828 students of Tripura have tested HIV positive and 47 have lost lives over the last 17 years.”

Meanwhile, in a press release, project director of Tripura state Aids control society Samarpita Dutta said the number of HIV infections detected in 2023-24 was 1790 with a positivity rate of 0.92% and as many as 44 HIV patients died who had been suffering from the disease for long.

In the previous year, the infection rate was 0.89% and 1847 people were found HIV infected but death cases were 67. Clarifying the rate of infection among students, Dutta said as many as 828 students registered since April 2007 and have been getting Antiretroviral Treatment from the designated centres. HIV positive cases in Tripura have increased among Injecting Drug Users. Since inception in 1999 and as of May this year, a total 5674 people have been found infected with the virus. The trend of people getting infected with HIV was more with Injecting Drug Users (IDU) in 2022-23 with 868 being positive among 8231 tested. However the number came down in 2023-24 with 650 positives after 8924 were tested.
