Times are bad because we aren’t making

in retrospect, i feel 2001 was a learning experience for the film industry. personally, i found it interesting, despite the slack and slump that people are talking about. i am viewing the whole scenario as a cinegoer and not as a director. i have seen almost all the movies released this year. i loved lagaan, dil chahta hai, monsoon wedding, bollywood calling and chandni bar.all of them taught me something. i think the technique in my film kabhi khushi kabhie gham was better because i saw hum dil de chuke sanam (though it was the year before). a film like lagaan taught me how conviction is important for anybody and it takes you to greater length and breadth. i was amazed at the playfulness as well as the humour of dil chahta hai. i knew farhan as a brat, but after dch i view farhan in a different light. i can connect with him and his sensibilities as a director. production values were amazing. now i know how to plan my third film and complete it in few months like he did in four months. i saw gadar in the cinema hall. there were so many moments of brilliance in it that you take home. a sequence that stands out is the mujra scene intercut with amisha's trauma. these are moments of brilliance. i think it is sunny's best performance till date, and i came back home with sunny's performance. last but not the least, filmakers should give importance to screenplay, to writing better stories. because, it is the paperwork that reflects on the screen. looking at the number of films that fail every year, i feel we must have research panels for every big film. we should do sample surveys and sample viewings before releasing it in theatres. i think i will start this trend with my next film. i come to the conclusion that good films run and bad films don't. instead of blaming the audience and everything around, i feel we must blame ourselves. we are responsible for the failures and the slump in the industry, because we are not churning out good cinema. there is one more observation i have. i feel we should wake up to other people's effort and appreciate it. times are bad because we are not making sincere efforts. we have to pull up our socks fast.
