can you beat this? an album that contains just two originals, a song given to them by singer-song writer sumit roy who is a well-wisher, two covers sung without permission and a straight plagiarism of a very popular title song of a bengali serial. it would be hard to recognise the gautam chattopadhyay number telephone or for that matter the famous manna dey number jibone ki pabo na in bangla band, swapno's debut album, kothae tumi.swapno was formed in 1999 with kaushik das in vocals, indranil bhattacharya on the drums, palas sarkar and gaurav verma on the guitar, debabrata bhattacharya on the bass, sanjeev pahan on roto drums, rajib das on keyboards, satish ojha on percussion and effects and raj banerjee as manager.
now the question is, if this is their debut album, why did they go for covers? because the songs are popular, said kaushik. no doubt since they have sold 60 copies in the recently concluded book fair itself! all this wouldn't have been possible without our parents and friends, added indranil. that remains the crux of the matter. shaileshwar roy, whom the band-members calls 'uncle', and who works in the treasury department of calcutta municipal corporation, behala, (as informed by the band) had sponsored the cost of recording and production. we were not given any receipt, said kaushik, to avoid income tax problems.recording was done on january 23, at pushpa audio under recordist pinaki das, but the cassette bears the name of hindustan audio, which was what pushpa audio was known as. the name changed some five months back. manik das, kaushik's father, said, i know one of manna dey's cousins living in the city and it won't be much of a problem in getting permission for 'jibone'. and kaushik informed us that his friend bobo, who knows gaurab chattopadhyay, gautam chattopadhyay's son, will obtain permission for telephone. it's a song by gautamkaku, he added, i don't think there should be a problem.now to another song in the album. kaushik claims it to be his original composition. however singer pratik chowdhury could identify its tune with the title song of srimati, which he sang with music arranged by rocket mondol. the only difference is that a line from the middle is missing, chowdhury said. the eminent singer was however not at all perturbed with news. most bands in the city are like this, he added, but most of them won't last long. manishankar mukherjee, chief public relations officer, rpg, informed that he doesn't have any knowledge of such a cassette. remake involves a lot of legal hassles which the experts know best, he said. i can't comment on it without consulting them.moreover, the swapno version of telephone also involves a change of phrase. minoti chattopadhyay, gautam chattopadhyay's wife, was shocked to hear the news. this is just not done, she said. permission comes later, i don't even know them. besides, gaurab informed he had never heard of anyone called bobo. what's happening? who are they? he asked in bewilderment.
