S R Dasgupta Member, Health Care sub-committee, Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry On the current health & well-being show in the city

What is the response to the health and well-being show?

The response is very good. Government departments as well private health care organisations, hospitals, medical associations are participating in this show.
NGOs who deal with health related issues are also participating. A lot of private as well as public sector companies are showing interest to promote health care system in Kolkata. Deals have already been signed with a few companies.

Why has BCCI taken the initiative to promote the health care scene in Kolkata?

This is the first time that we are holding this kind of a show in association with the state government. The aim is to showcase West Bengal as an ideal destination for treatment. There are many private and public sector companies and entrepreneurs who are interested to start health related projects and also want to invest in hospital projects and diagnostic projects in the city. The government has agreed to provide the required infrastructure, while BCCI acts as a catalyst.

Which are the areas where entrepreneurs are showing more interest to invest?

They are showing more interest in ayurvedic projects, cancer research and women and child care.

Do you feel Kolkata is an ideal place to invest in health care?

Yes, Kolkata is an ideal place because the infrastructure is already available. There is no dearth of competent medical professionals and hospitals here. Treatment facilities have improved remarkably over the last few years and more and more people can now get those treatments in their home city for which they earlier had to travel to other cities.

When infrastructure is so well grounded, what is the reason behind so many deaths taking place in the city hospitals?

This is mainly due to the demand and supply gap. Each hospital has a maximum capacity but the demand far exceeds the facilities.
