If you thought swimming would help you quickly lose that extra flab, you are mistaken. A cold water swim in summer may be invigorating but it actually increases your appetite which, in turn, may result in weight gain. The University of Florida research team recently tested and found out that individuals who swim in cooler water have an exaggerated calorie intake following exercise. That''s why they don''t lose much weight. The exercise itself may not cause the problem. It''s the increased eating after the exercise is over.

"Swimming tires a person completely and he feels very hungry after a session. And though you lose more calories in running or jogging, swimming involves the movement of the entire body and requires more force in wading through the water. That also makes one eat. Thus, you end up not losing as much weight as compared to jogging," said Dr Biswajit Banerjee, an expert in medicine.

According to dietitian Shalini Padia, most people tend to go on a binge after a swim. "People love having sev puri, pani puri or potato chips, depending on what they can lay their hands on at that moment," said Padia. While 30 minutes of swimming burns about 150 calories, the calorie spend get neutralised if you have a plate of sev puri (about 160 calories) and 10 potato chips (about 114 calories).

Frequenting swimming clubs is a popular passion for people, particularly during summer. "Each slot is for 40 minutes. People swim either to lose weight, grow muscle or just to keep fit," said Sukomal Chakraborty, secretary of a popular swimming club in the city.
madhurima.nandy@timesgroup.com
