Women entrepreneurs are constantly redefining norms
Back when I started my career, the landscape for women was starkly different. It might seem like women are making leaps in big organisations, marching forward alongside men, but rewind to when I began – women in leadership roles were like rare gems. Often, people assumed any woman present was there to assist, not to take the lead. My mere presence in certain forums often led to assumptions that I was there in a supportive capacity. I vividly recall an event where I was addressing a room full of seasoned men. Initially, I was taken for a staff member present to serve the delegates, until I stood on the podium, ready to share my insights. It’s moments like these that highlight how far we’ve come, and yet, how much further we can journey.
From being perceived as support staff to taking the stage, my journey of being a founder of a digital supply chain organisation has been an intriguing expedition. As a woman founder, navigating this sector and steering a team of several talented women in key leadership roles has been both gratifying and challenging. Ensuring the safety and well-being of my team has been a paramount consideration, as we venture into diverse and sometimes unpredictable environments.
The entrepreneurial path for women comes with its own set of expectations and challenges. The perception that women entrepreneurs should be accommodating rather than assertive is one that I have encountered. Challenges arise when gender stereotypes seep into entrepreneurial endeavours. Throughout my journey, I’ve come across numerous instances where individuals attempted to use ridicule and intimidation as tactics for negotiation. What caught them off guard, though, was the unwavering determination and resilience exhibited by my entire Tongadive team.
I’ve learned that success is not about having it all simultaneously, but rather prioritising what matters most each day and finding the right balance. As we march forward, women entrepreneurs are continuously redefining norms and defying expectations. Each step we take paves the way for a future where assumptions based on gender are replaced by appreciation for capabilities.
