Don’t worry about career breaks, ensure you network
Taking a career break to prioritise family is a decision many of us make. However, after a 10-year hiatus, the desire to reconnect with my professional aspirations became increasingly strong. Despite initial concerns, I chose to rejoin the workforce. Here are the key pointers that helped me fulfil this dream of mine.
Staying connected: Networking during the career break
Recognising the importance of staying connected with people in my field during the career break, I took proactive steps to network. Utilising LinkedIn and WhatsApp groups like India HR Network and HR Professional club, I stayed informed about industry trends, developments, and the evolving skill requirements. These connections not only provided valuable insights but also offered a supportive network of like-minded professionals.
From mom to value creator: Leveraging skills and building connections
As a mom, I have honed my skills in multitasking, problem-solving, and maintaining composure in challenging situations. Juggling multiple responsibilities, meeting deadlines, and adapting to dynamic circumstances have sharpened my ability to quickly devise creative solutions to complex problems. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to build meaningful connections with people. Whether it's through active listening, open communication, or fostering teamwork, I have a natural talent for bringing individuals together.
The power of support: Family and empowering organisations
A key factor in my successful return to work was the unwavering support of my family which empowered me to explore job opportunities aligned with my goals and aspirations. Additionally, I’ll highlight the significance of organisations like Ascendion that value individuals for their skills and do not focus much on the duration of the career gap. The work culture at Ascendion is very empowering as the leaders here have always entrusted me with decision-making. Also, at Ascendion, there are focused interventions to encourage women's talent pipeline.
Advice for returning professionals
Based on my personal experience, I believe that returning to the workforce after a significant career break may seem daunting, but it is possible with the right mindset, networking, staying informed about industry developments, and seeking support from loved ones.
