Tariff row: China warns against 'law of jungle' ahead of Trump–Xi meet; wants 'free trade system'
Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday cautioned against rising “unilateralism” in global trade, urging nations not to revert to “the law of the jungle” amid escalating tariff tensions with the United States.
Speaking at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Li said economic globalization and multipolarity were “irreversible,” calling for stronger support for the global free trade system. He warned that unilateralism and protectionism were “rampant” and posed “huge risks to the region.”
His remarks came ahead of a key meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, scheduled for Thursday in South Korea, where both leaders are expected to discuss ways to ease their ongoing trade disputes.
Li’s comments were seen as a veiled criticism of Trump’s tariff policies, which have disrupted global trade networks and financial markets, as reported by AFP.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters while en route to Japan, Trump expressed optimism about reaching an agreement with Xi during their upcoming talks. It will mark the first face-to-face talks between the two leaders since Donald Trump began his second term in January.
Many hope the meeting will help ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
The trade conflict between Washington and Beijing has intensified since Trump announced sweeping tariffs earlier this year. Both sides have been negotiating to avert another round of 100 per cent tariffs set to take effect on November 1.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng held two days of talks over the weekend, with both sides reporting progress. China’s Vice Commerce Minister Li Chenggang said a “preliminary consensus” had been reached, while Bessent told ABC News that the additional tariffs had been “effectively averted.”
He added that the two countries were close to finalising agreements on rare earth exports and American soybean trade.

Trump did the same thing that China did to India by acquiring aksai chin & pinching time & again on NE areas, what it did by forcefully acquiring tibet, scs, since ages it has been law of the jungle only china was also ruled by other rulers will china hand it over the territories to Mongols so entire history has been like this instead of uniting as 1 nation & finishing all wars, debts, poverty, & providing basics to all all are trying to flex there muscle to grab whatever they can it has been always the same jungle law just methods change, we all have good & bad virtues, though today it might seem that no one can challenge us but that's the hallucination, history is the proof civilizations change no matter how knowledgeful, powerful they were, similar things are happening the way things are happening, uniting might save us if nature gives us time to recover & along with 1 kid policy but egos won't let us think us on those lines so whoever has the upper hand will keep using it but then everything has effects in present times we are so much divided that's why world leaders have started using 3ww so often as bluff but sometimes bluff when not expected turns real & our actions will be responsible that's what Mahabharat, Ramayana was written for to warn humans but as usual kaliyug effect of vinash kale viprit buddhi is happening whereas the kind of science humans, US, Russia,China,EU etc have developed could have been used to make this world a better placeRead allPost comment
