China's consumer inflation hits five-month low in November

NEW DELHI: China's consumer inflation reached its lowest point in five months during November, with producer prices continuing to decline despite recent economic stimulus measures.

The nation, being the world's second-largest economy, faces potential challenges from anticipated tariffs under a possible second Trump administration, alongside existing economic difficulties, indicating a need for additional policy support to maintain growth stability.

The consumer price index increased by 0.2% year-on-year in November, lower than October's 0.3% rise and falling short of economists' projected 0.5% increase, according to National Bureau of Statistics data released on December 9.

Monthly CPI figures showed a 0.6% decrease, exceeding October's 0.3% decline and surpassing the expected 0.4% reduction.

The core inflation rate, which excludes food and fuel prices, showed a slight increase to 0.3% from October's 0.2%.

Despite recent positive consumer spending trends, supported by incentives for automobile and appliance purchases, these measures have not generated sufficient economic momentum.

Beijing opted for a 10 trillion yuan ($1.37 trillion) debt package in November to address local government financial pressures, rather than implementing direct economic stimulus.

Government advisers suggest targeting approximately 5.0% economic growth for 2025, advocating enhanced fiscal stimulus to counter the anticipated impact of US tariff increases on exports, as reported by Reuters.

The producer price index demonstrated a 2.5% year-on-year decrease in November, showing improvement from October's 2.9% decline and performing better than the predicted 2.8% reduction.
