Indian Railways to launch 7 new high-speed rail corridors! Union Budget 2026 saw the announcement of seven new high-speed rail corridors. Together these high-speed rail corridors, or bullet train corridors as they are more commonly called, will span a length of over 4,000 kilometres, with investments of over Rs 16 lakh crore expected to complete them. From Delhi to Varanasi, Mumbai to Pune and Chennai to Bengaluru, the new high-speed rail corridors aim to connect vital economic centres. By definition high-speed rail boasts of trains on dedicated corridors that can run on speeds greater than 250 kmph. What are the seven new routes for bullet trains announced in the Budget and how fast will you be able to reach from one city to the other? We take a look: (AI image for representative purpose)

Delhi-Varanasi Bullet Train

The Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail corridor is expected to bring down the train travel time between the two cities to just 3 hours and 50 minutes. This is less than half the time taken by the current fastest train between the two cities - the Vande Bharat Express which takes 8 hours. (AI image for representative purpose)

3/10

Varanasi-Siliguri Bullet Train

The Varanasi-Siliguri high-speed rail corridor will run via Patna. The train travel time on the bullet train will be just 2 hours and 55 minutes. In effect with the extended high-speed rail corridor, travel between Delhi to Siliguri would be shortened drastically. (AI image for representative purpose)

Chennai–Bengaluru Bullet Train

The upcoming Chennai–Bengaluru bullet train high-speed rail corridor is likely to bring down the train travel time between the two important economic centres to just 1 hour and 13 minutes! This is comparable to the over 1 hour flight time between the two cities, not accounting for the additional time it takes to check-in at the airport etc. (AI image for representative purpose)

Bengaluru–Hyderabad Bullet Train

The Bengaluru–Hyderabad high-speed rail corridor is projected to reduce the train travel time between the two technology hubs to just about 2 hours. Currently the fastest train between the two cities is a Vande Bharat Express. (AI image for representative purpose)

Chennai–Hyderabad Bullet Train

Indian Railways estimates that the Chennai–Hyderabad high-speed rail corridor will bring down the travel time by train to around 2 hours 55 minutes, which is much less than the current train travel time. (AI image for representative purpose)

7/10

Mumbai–Pune Bullet Train

A bullet train or high-speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Pune, two important cities in Maharashtra, would make commuting a breeze, taking less than one hour! Indian Railways projects that the travel time between Mumbai and Pune will be just 48 minutes with a high-speed train. (AI image for representative purpose)

Pune–Hyderabad Bullet Train

The Pune-Hyderabad high-speed rail corridor will bring down the train travel time to less than 2 hours! According to Indian Railways, it will take just 1 hour and 55 minutes on a bullet train between the two cities. The bullet trains are primarily for longer routes than for shorter routes. PM want to carry on the mistake he did by beginning with Ahmedabad, his long time constituency, to Mumbai, the key Industrial City and not from Delhi to Mumbai as usual.
