MUMBAI/PUNE/AHMEDABAD: The income-tax department on Wednesday conducted surveys on owners of windmills and equipment suppliers on information that they were claiming undue depreciation.
Depreciation claims from owners of windmills are about Rs 1,000 crore. The department believes that at least 50% are false claims.
The biggest name in the industry, Suzlon Energy, was also surveyed.
Surveys were conducted in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, Daman and Diu.
The depreciation allowed to windmill owners is 80%. The department allegedly found that the units were either not manufacturing any energy or in some cases had not installed the machinery at all, sources said.
Vivek Kher, GM, Suzlon Energy, said, "The authorities have visited our offices for verifying some accounting records."
