Vande Bharat platform-led home made bullet train soon! Indian Railways looks to manufacture 250 kmph speed trains
In the global context, high-speed trains are defined as those capable of traveling at speeds exceeding 250 kmph, such as the French TGV and the Japanese Shinkansen.

India is currently relying on Japanese technology for the bullet trains that will operate on the Ahmedabad to Mumbai line, which is currently under construction. The Shinkansen E5 series bullet trains, which India plans to deploy on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, can reach speeds of up to 320 kmph.
The official mentioned that the primary focus until now has been on enhancing the speed of Indian Railways trains. "The (proposed) variant Vande Bharat trains can now reach from zero to 100 kmph in 52 seconds while the existing bullet trains do this in 54 seconds," he said.
The Vande Bharat trains, which are indigenously developed, are manufactured by ICF. The made-in-India bullet trains will operate on the recently announced north, south, and east corridors. "The new corridors will be using more Indian tech and domestic manufacturing," the official added.
These corridors will complement the western corridor, which was developed in collaboration with Japan and utilizes Japanese technology. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing a soft loan of approximately Rs 40,000 crore for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project, with the total project cost exceeding Rs 1.08 lakh crore.
The National High Speed Rail Corp. Ltd (NHSRCL), responsible for implementing India’s first bullet train project, recently announced the completion of 300 km of pier work. The land acquisition process for the entire 508 km stretch was finalized in January.
Delhi-Ahmedabad bullet train project: Imagine being able to travel from Delhi to Ahmedabad in just 3.5 hours by train! A new bullet train project is in the works to make this dream a reality in the coming years, reported TOI. Indian Railways has already finalised the detailed project report for this new bullet train project. If it gets the government nod, the Delhi-Ahmedabad bullet train project will be the second high-speed rail service in Gujarat. From maximum speed to proposed stations and status, we take a look at top things we know about the Delhi-Ahmedabad bullet train project:
Delhi-Ahmedabad bullet train speed: The train is expected to operate at a maximum speed of 350 km per hour. The proposed train will operate on an elevated track, maintaining an average speed of 250 km/hour, reducing the travel time between the two cities from the current 12 hours to a mere 3.5 hours. Delhi-Ahmedabad bullet train project details: The high-speed tracks will be aligned with the existing railway infrastructure. The alignment was strategically selected to minimize the need for land acquisition. (AI image for representative purposes)
Delhi-Ahmedabad bullet train project status: The National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRC) commenced the bidding process for the final alignment design of the high-speed rail line in September 2020. The process involved the utilization of aerial LiDAR surveys to accelerate the planning phase. Currently, the project is pending final approval from the central government. The acquisition of private land is a major hurdle in the implementation of large-scale projects, often leading to prolonged legal disputes that consume a significant amount of time. Elevated tracks and alignment with existing railway network will help avoid these issues. (AI image for representative purposes)
The Ahmedabad-Delhi bullet train is one of six new high-speed rail projects that the Central government has planned to improve connectivity and boost tourism across the nation. In its manifesto for the forthcoming Lok Sabha election, BJP has stated that one bullet train each will run in north, south and east India. (AI image for representative purposes)
India’s first bullet train project between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is partially expected to become operational by July 2026. The Gujarat stretch of the first bullet train project is expected to commence operations. The Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project is being funded by Japan’s JICA.
