The $7-bn VF Corporation of US is setting up a joint venture with Arvind Mills to design, market and distribute VF's branded lifestyle apparel in India.

BANGALORE: The $7-billion VF Corporation of US is setting up a joint venture with Arvind Mills to design, market and distribute VF's branded lifestyle apparel in India.
The joint venture — VF Arvind Brands — will initially encompass Lee, Wrangler, Nautica, JanSport and Kipling brands, which were till now marketed in India under licensing and distribution agreements with Arvind Fashions, an Arvind Mills arm.

The US-based VF, one of the world's largest apparel companies, will own a 60% stake in the joint venture, and Arvind Mills 40%. VF will pay $33 million to Arvind Mills for this stake. This values the five brands coming into the new venture at about $56 million.
In the fiscal ended March 31, 2006, the five brands had registered a turnover of $30 million, and this year, it is expected to grow to about $40 million, Darshan Mehta, president of Arvind Brands and the CEO of the new venture, said. Lee and Wrangler constitute the bulk of these revenues. The other three brands were introduced recently in the Indian market.
Mehta will report to Eric Wiseman, chairman of the JV company and president and COO of VF Corporation.Wiseman, through a video-link from the US, told TOI that the new venture will serve as the vehicle for launching additional brands in India in the future. He also said that VF would be interested in acquiring strong local brands. "VF has been doing that internationally," he said.
VF has other brands like Riders, Rustler, Vanity Fair, Reef and Red Kap. Wiseman said India is a "perfect market for us" because of its huge branded apparel market, rapidly growing economy and spending power, and the growing aspirations of its people.
