NEW DELHI: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived at Parliament on Saturday to present Union Budget 2025 dressed in a Madhubani art saree made by Padma awardee Dulari Devi.

Dulari Devi is a 2021 Padma Shri awardee. When FM visited Madhubani for a credit outreach activity at Mithila Art Institute, she met Dulari Devi and had a cordial exchange of thoughts on Madhubani art in Bihar.

Dulari Devi had presented the saree and asked FM to wear it for the budget day.

The presentation of the Budget generates significant interest, including attention towards the finance minister's choice of attire. FM Sitharaman's saree selections for budget presentations have consistently drawn public interest.

FM Nirmala Sitharaman's budget day sarees

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present her 8th budget today. Let us have a look at her sarees through the years on the budget day.

Presenting her 8th continous budget in the year 2025, the finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman chose to wear a white saree with Madhubani artwork and a golden borders, carrying the traditional 'bahi khata'.

Presenting the 2024 Union budget, her seventh budget in a row, the finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman opted for a white silk saree with magenta border adorned with golden motifs paired with a 'bahi khata'.

Presenting her interim budget in 2024, the finance minister chose a blue handloom saree. She wore a tussar silk saree with kantha handiwork paired with a traditional 'bahi khata'.

In 2023, the FM donned a traditional temple border red saree with black border and intricate golden work.

In 2022, the finance minister donned a brown Bomkai saree, typically made in the Eastern Indian state of Odisha. The rusty brown tone of her saree was a combination of two earthly colours: brown and red.

In 2021, Nirmala Sitharaman wore a red and off-white silk Pochampally saree, featuring intricate ikat patterns on the pallu and a green border. Traditionally crafted in Bhoodan Pochampally, Telangana, this weaving style hails from a region famously known as the 'silk city of India.'

In 2020, Sitharaman donned a striking yellow-gold silk saree with a blue border and a matching blouse. The vibrant yellow, which symbolises prosperity, was seen as a reflection of the nation's aspirations for economic growth, amid the slump due to pandemic.

For presenting her first Union Budget in 2019, the finance minister opted for a bright pink Mangalgiri saree with a golden border. She also replaced the briefcase with a traditional ‘Bahi Khata,’ carrying the budget papers in a red silk cloth adorned with a golden national emblem on top.

For her unprecedented seventh Union Budget presentation in 2023, she selected a white silk saree featuring a magenta border with golden designs. For the interim budget earlier this year, she appeared in a blue handloom saree, carrying a 'bahi-khata' with a red covering.

Her first budget presentation in 2019 featured a bright pink Mangalgiri saree with gold borders. That year marked the inaugural use of the traditional 'bahi khata' instead of a briefcase. The Budget documents were enclosed in red silk fabric bearing the national emblem.

For 2020, she selected a yellow-gold silk saree complemented by a blue border and matching blouse. Yellow, traditionally associated with abundance, reflected national economic aspirations.

The 2021 presentation saw her wearing a red and off-white Pochampally silk sari, featuring ikat patterns and a green border. Pochampally ikat, crafted in Bhoodan Pochampally, Telangana, has earned the region recognition as India's 'silk city'.

In 2022, she chose a Bomkai saree from Odisha, displaying a distinctive rusty brown colour achieved by blending brown and red shades.

For last year's presentation, she wore a red temple saree featuring a black border decorated with intricate golden work.

Sitharaman is poised to establish a new record by presenting her seventh consecutive budget, exceeding late Moraji Desai's six successive presentations.
