Unilever proposes Bharti's Sunil Mittal as non-executive director

Global FMCG firm Unilever today said it has proposed to appoint founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises Sunil Bharti Mittal as non-executive director on its board.

NEW DELHI: Global FMCG firm Unilever today said it has proposed to appoint founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises Sunil Bharti Mittal as non-executive director on its board.
The company said Mittal will be proposed for election to the board at the Annual General Meeting to be held in London on May 11 and Rotterdam on May 12, 2011.
"I'm pleased that Sunil Bharti Mittal has agreed to be proposed to join the board.
He is distinguished in his field and will further strengthen and independence of the board as well as broadening its diversity," Unilever Chairman Michael Treschow said in statement.
Mittal is also the group CEO of Bharti Enterprises as well as the founder and Managing Director Bharti Airtel, one of the largest telecom providers across 19 Asian and African countries.
"He brings to Unilever business building experience in developing markets ranging from the entrepreneurial to large scale corporate activities," the firm said.
Besides, Mittal has been the President of industry chamber Confederation of Indian Industry (2007-08) and was also an independent non-executive director of Standard Chartered Plc (2007-2009).
Mittal will be the second Indian business leader after Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy from outside the Unilever fold to be on the board of the Anglo-Dutch FMCG giant.
Murthy was an independent director on Unilever's board in 2008-09.
