Stock market today: The Indian equity markets ended Friday on a subdued note as the BSE Sensex declined by 264.27 points or 0.31%, closing at 85,571.85. Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 slipped 37.10 points or 0.14% to settle at 26,178.95. The Nifty Bank index saw the steepest fall, dropping by 1.00% to 53,834.30, weighed down by losses in financial stocks. Meanwhile, Nifty Next 50 and Nifty Midcap Select indices posted gains of 0.94% and 0.54%, respectively.
Top gainers: Sun Pharma emerged as the top gainer, rising by 2.67% to close at Rs 1,949. Titan also saw a notable increase of 1.58%, ending the day at Rs 3,817. NTPC and Reliance gained 1.51% and 1.50%, respectively, while HCL Technologies and Bajaj Finserv posted gains of 1.37% and 1.10%.
Top losers: On the losing side, Power Grid witnessed the biggest decline, falling 2.75% to Rs 355.20. ICICI Bank dropped 1.80% to Rs 1,307, while Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank declined by 1.74% and 1.69%, respectively. Kotak Mahindra Bank and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) also saw losses, down 1.39% and 1.37%.
Financial stocks struggled throughout the session, leading to a dip in the broader market. However, gains in pharma, energy, and IT sectors helped limit the overall decline.
On Friday, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index led the gains in Asian markets, surging over 2.5% during the session. Other indices in the region remained relatively flat, with Japan's Nikkei 225 edging up 0.10%, Taiwan's index increasing by 0.4%, and South Korea's KOSPI dipping by 0.04%.
In the US markets on Thursday, modest gains were recorded, with the S&P 500 rising 0.40% and the Nasdaq climbing 0.60%. Meanwhile, in Europe, France's CAC index saw a strong rally, gaining more than 2.2%.
