State-owned MTNL defaults on Rs 1,000 crore loan to Bank of India
MUMBAI: State-owned telecom company MTNL has defaulted on its Rs 1,000-crore loan to Bank of India, compelling the lender to make a Rs 200-crore provision in its financials for the second quarter of FY25.
Earlier, SBI had declared loans to MTNL as sub-standard, requiring a provision. According to lenders, chances of recovery in the loan are high given that it is a govt-owned company and the Centre has provided guarantees to some of the borrowings by way of bonds.
Announcing the results for Q2FY25, Bank of India MD & CEO Rajneesh Karnatak said that the bank had to make higher provisions because of default on a Rs 1,000 crore loan account to a public sector telecom firm, which sources identified as MTNL. Despite the provision, Bank of India reported a net profit of Rs 2,374 crore, up 63% from the year-ago period.
MTNL had reported a loss of Rs 3,303 crore in FY24 as revenues slid further. Govt has been looking at various exit routes for the one-time telecom giant, which failed to prepare itself for the inevitable obsolescence of wired telephone lines as the cost of cellular services plunged.

MTNL, just like BSNL & VSNL were governed by central govt of India. These companies were managed both by central government and Tata communications Ltd. All of them were profitable, Navratna companies amongst Telecom sector of India . They revolutionized Indian telecom sector and positioned Indian IT sector amongst the top in the world. Then came the corrupt BJP government of Gujarati Narendra Modi in 2014. And in 2015 another Gujarati Industrialist Mukesh Ambani launched his Jio Telecom. Thereafter BJP government slow poisoned both bsnl and mtnl by providing inadequate funds , insufficient licences , infrastructure and kept rate cards high so that Ambani's Jio Telecom could come out with dirt cheap rates . In 2021 BSNL was officially declared sick followed by MTNL in 2022. In 2021 BJP government sold there entire stakes in VSNL to Tata Communications Ltd or rather sold India's navratna company to TATA's. BJP government ensured that BSNL and MTNL's became sick companies and there market shares crashed from 92% to mere 7.8%. And thus they enabled Jio, Airtel and Idea-Vodaphone to gain total control of Indian telecom Market. Thus BJP party sole agenda after coming to power was to destroy and sell India's National Wealth wrt to closing government of India's profitable "Navratna Companies" to there crony capitalists friends in private sectors who were funding both BJP and RSS party. Another Sinister agenda of BJP and RSS was to close each and every government of India companies either formed during British rule or formed during Nehru's Congress Government and later nurchured by subsequent congress or non-BJP governments. Another government of India's navaratna company LIC whose market capitalisation is almost 8 trillion INR, during ongoing BJP rule, has invested 21% stakes in Adani group. Why ? Any guess ? During 3rd ongoing regime of BJP and before they are completely thrown out in next general elections or most likely earlier, any guess how much Adani's stake in LIC will increase from 21% ? When BJP is completely washed out of central government and new government take control, rascal Narendra Modi must have sold almost entire wealth of India into the hands of his crony capitalists friends. They were premier telecom companies in India. First internet service was brought in India by government of India's" Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd " VSNL. And Indian IT sector blossomed under VSNL alongwith all industries. In 2002 govt privatized VSNL and sold 25% stake in VSNL to Tata's, and operations were taken over by Tata Communications Ltd. And they pumped much needed professionalism in VSNL and weeded out toxic corruption in the company. And it brought new technologies and high speed internet much needed for overall development of India & our industries. Then came rascal BJP government in 2014 is deliberately not funding Read allPost comment
